Solution to Ubuntu 9.04 “Enter password for default keyring to unlock”

May 23rd, 2009 by Eoin eTeanga Leave a reply »

Took weeks to find a solution to this error.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty, upon startup I kept getting the following error:

Enter password for default keyring to unlock

The application ‘NetworkManager Applet’ (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked.

The solution

  1. Right-click on the wireless applet in the task bar
  2. Find your wireless connection, and hit Edit.
  3. Check the option “Available to all users”.

Thanks to tentwelveight for uncovering the answer.

Thank you! You’re a life saver. This was driving me insane, I had wireless router box which I had to keep connecting a monitor and keyboard to. All solved now!

I had been just closing the window that keeps on asking for the password and after killing it 10-15 times, I get connected. I have just followed the instructions – and will know soon if it has helped. Million dollar question for me – what password does it expect in the first place? Is it the root/admin password? I guess not – supplying it did not work! How does one set the keyring password then? If I never set one, what’s the default one? Will greatly appreciate any insights. – Abhay

    Thanks again

@Abhay Patil Take a look in System -> Preferences -> Encryption and Keyrings.

@Roy good to know that this works on Notebook Remix too!
